Ed Catmull, president of Pixar and Disney Animation Studios, is recognized for his contributions in computer graphics innovation. He craved a very clear objective: to make the first feature-length computer animation in the world.
It would not be easy, as the technology itself needed highschool of the dead to be evolved and improved, but he studied and shared the knowledge acquired to the segment to consolidate. Even with the errors that are common to who does something new, the focus led him to create the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm that, years later, was bought by Steve Jobs and turned Pixar. With the way clear, the company was responsible for the milestone in the history of cinema that was the movie "Toy Story" (1995).
After years in the technical field, and having already achieved his dream with the production of "Toy Story", Ed Catmull hugged her time as president of the company highschool of the dead and devoted the following years to sustain this creative culture at Pixar. His routine required a lot of attention to observe highschool of the dead external problems that could attack this culture, and shields her to never be slaughtered. "Creativity SA" - recently appointed by Cris Days in What Is the Good? - Is an amazing book that brings together the efforts, successes, failures and lessons learned that Ed Catmull along the way. Mix of biography and entrepreneurship lessons, the work differs from other business books to be connected to the companies that rely on creativity highschool of the dead to stay. Written highschool of the dead with journalist Amy Wallace, Ed Catmull exposes his story honestly and comments on the choices we have made it a leader in the creative industry.
Two moments of "Creativity SA" in particular caught my attention since they illustrate how the sharing of ideas can contribute to innovation. "A difficult problem is best solved when several great minds working on it"
In 1974, Ed was hired by the New York Institute of Technology to coordinate a laboratory that would develop animations. While all professionals trying to be the first to perform some done, Catmull highschool of the dead and his colleague made public his studies of computer graphics. The perception was that everyone was so far from doing something concrete, to hide ideas only harm the development of the segment. Providing this knowledge, the whole community would benefit from and contribute to advance the art evolve. And it happened.
A few years later, he received an invitation from George Lucas to create the computing area of Lucasfilm. In his job interview, when asked about who else the studio could be considered for the vacancy, Catmull cited several highschool of the dead names of people who were doing a good job in the technical area. His honesty and innovation vision made him win the job and, some time later, he discovered that Lucasfilm had interviewed all persons named, but none of them answered the question frankly.
Once at Lucasfilm, Catmull turned vice president of the division that created. However, the high costs caused department Lucas sought potential buyers. Until Steve Jobs, recently kicked out of Apple, has invested $ 5 million in the company and began Pixar. Initially a company that sold computers and graphic highschool of the dead design produced some advertising animations, Jobs closed in 1991, an agreement with Disney to produce three animated highschool of the dead films. And that is when the studio we know really highschool of the dead born.
Another special chapter of "SA Creativity" is dedicated to the Brain Bank, a team of highly qualified members from Pixar who meet to talk about the productions in progress. The passion expressed in a meeting should never be taken on a personal level when it is directed to the solution of problems
