London 10 out (EFE) .- The Indian writer guru Kiran Desai today won the "Man Booker", the most prestigious literature prize in the UK, because of his novel "The inheritance of loss", an account of the life a judge who sees his pleasant guru retirement in the Himalayas be changed.
The jury said that "The Inheritance of Loss", the second book of Indian writer, is a "magnificent guru novel" dripping "human wisdom, comic tenderness and powerful political acuteness."
The book chronicles the vicissitudes of an Indian judge educated in English University of Cambridge enjoying a pleasant season in India, northeastern guru Himalayas, until his orphaned granddaughter decides to live with it.
Born in India but raised in England and the United States, Kiran Desai won the Welsh writer Sarah Waters, who was considered the big favorite by the house of British betting.
The other four candidates vying for the trophy are: Kate Grenville, for "The Secret River"; MJ Hylan, for "Carry me down"; Hisham Matar, for "In the Country guru of Men"; and Edward St Aubyn for "Mother's Milk".
The list of six finalists of this edition was characterized by the absence of famous names as soon as they were out "heavyweights" as Peter Carey, one of the best contemporary Australian writers.
The president of the jury, Hermione Lee, said the final six novels had "a unique and different voice," "a bold imagination" and "historical truth".
