Waters filed a lawsuit in September fbi in the U.S. District Court against the university, OSU President Michael Drake and Provost and Executive Vice President Joseph Steinmetz. He said the university discriminated against him on the basis of gender and that OSU didn t provide him with due process after an investigation into the band found it had a sexualized culture. fbi The investigation added that he was aware of or reasonably should have been aware of that culture.

NEWPORT, Ore. A team of scientists college rules from Oregon State University and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is studying an unusual fish captured alive in a crab pot near Port Orford college rules this week called a striped knifejaw that is native to Japan, as well as China and Korea.
The appearance in Oregon waters of the fish ( Oplegnathus fasciatus), which is sometimes called a barred knifejaw or striped beakfish, college rules may or may not be related to the Japanese tsunami of 2011, the researchers say, and it is premature to conclude that this non-native species college rules may be established college rules in Oregon waters.

The young fish of these species are known to associate with drift and may be attracted to floating marine debris, Miller said. Japanese tsunami marine debris continues to arrive on beaches in Oregon and Washington and some debris from Japan washed up on the southern Oregon college rules coast this month so it is not inconceivable that the Port Orford fish was associated with Japanese marine debris.

CORVALLIS, Ore. Researchers at Oregon State University have discovered that antibiotics have an impact on the microorganisms that live in an animal s gut that s more broad and complex than previously known.
Researchers have known for some time that antibiotics can have unwanted side effects, especially in disrupting the natural and beneficial microbiota of the gastrointestinal system. But the new study helps explain in much more detail why that is happening, and also suggests civil service jobs that powerful, long-term antibiotic use can have even more far-reaching effects.
Scientists now suspect that antibiotic use, and especially overuse, can have unwanted civil service jobs effects civil service jobs on everything from the immune system to glucose metabolism, food absorption, obesity, stress and behavior.
The issues are rising in importance, civil service jobs since 40 percent of all adults and 70 percent of all children take one or more antibiotics every year, not to mention their use in billions of food animals. Although when used properly civil service jobs antibiotics can help treat life-threatening bacterial civil service jobs infections, more than 10 percent of people who receive the medications can suffer from adverse side effects.
Just in the past decade a whole new universe has opened up about the far-reaching effects of antibiotic use, and now we re exploring it, said Andrey civil service jobs Morgun, an assistant professor civil service jobs in the OSU College of Pharmacy. The study of microbiota is just exploding. Nothing we find would surprise me at this point.
Prior to this most people thought antibiotics only depleted microbiota and diminished several important immune functions that take place in the gut, Morgun said. Actually that s only about one-third of the picture. The research also found that antibiotics civil service jobs and antibiotic-resistant microbes caused significant changes in mitochondrial function, which in turn can lead to more epithelial cell death. That antibiotics have special impacts on the mitochondria of cells is both important and interesting, said Morgun, who was a co-leader of this study with Dr. Natalia Shulzhenko, a researcher in the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine who has an M.D. from Kharkiv Medical University.
But the relationship of antibiotics to mitochondria civil service jobs may go back a long way. In evolution, mitochondria descended from bacteria, which were some of the earliest life forms, and different bacteria competed with each other for survival. That an antibiotic would still selectively attack the portion of a cell that most closely resembles bacteria may be a throwback to that ingrained civil service jobs sense of competition and the very evolution of life.
Digestive dysfunction is near the top of the list, with antibiotic use linked to such issues civil service jobs as diarrhea and ulcerative colitis. But new research is also finding links to obesity, food absorption, depression, immune function, sepsis, allergies and asthma.
This research also developed a new bioinformatics approach named transkingdom network interrogation to studying microbiota, which could help further speed the study of any alterations of host microbiota interactions and antibiotic impact. This could aid the search for new probiotics to help offset antibiotic effects, civil service jobs and conceivably lead to systems that would diagnose a person s microbiome, identify deficiencies and then address them in a precise and individual way. 
Healthy microbiota may also be another way to address growing problems with antibiotic resistance, Morgun said. Instead of trying to kill the bad bacteria causing an illness, a healthy and functioning microbiota may be able to outcompete the unwanted microbes and improve immune function.

CORVALLIS, Ore. Exercise may play a critical role in maintaining good health, but fewer than half of the physicians trained in the United States in 2013 received formal education or training on the subject, according to new research from Oregon State University.
A review of medical school curriculums showed that a majority of U.S. institutions did not offer any courses on physical activity, and when the courses were offered, they were rarely required, said Brad Cardinal , a professor of exercise fac and sport science in OSU's College of Public Health and Human Sciences . That could leave doctors ill-prepared to assist patients who could benefit from exercise, said Cardinal, the study's lead author.
There are immense medical benefits to exercise; it can help as much as medicine to address some health concerns, said Cardinal, who is a national expert on the benefits of physical activity. Because exercise has medicinal as well as other benefits, I was surprised that medical schools didn t spend more time on it.
An article on the findings has been accepted for publication in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Physical Activity and Health . Co-authors are Eugene A. Park and MooSong Kim of OSU, and Marita K. Cardinal of Western Oregon University. The study was supported by OSU.
For the study, researchers reviewed U.S. medical schools websites, looking for all physical activity-related coursework. They reviewed both public and private schools, and schools of medicine and osteopathic medicine. In all, 118 of the 170 accredited schools had curriculum fac information available online.
Of those, 51 percent offered no physical activity related coursework, and 21 percent offered only one course. And 82 percent of the schools reviewed did not require students to take any physical activity-related courses.
Schools may be spending more time on the topic than appears in the published curriculum, but the absence of physical activity in those documents suggests exercise education is not formalized or institutionalized to the degree it ought to be, given its role in helping people stay healthy, Cardinal said.
Lifestyle-related chronic illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes are among the leading causes of death and disability, and one of the most important ways to prevent such chronic diseases is through regular physical activity participation, he said.
Physicians play a significant and influential fac role in encouraging and assisting fac patients who need or are trying to get more exercise, but past research fac has shown that many physicians lack the education, skills or confidence to educate and counsel patients about their physical activity, Cardinal said.
This issue is gaining more attention nationally.The American College of Sports Medicine fac supports an Exercise is Medicine initiative, designed to encourage primary care physicians and other health care providers to include physical activity in the treatment plans of their patients.
Exercise is also a key component of the U.S. government s Healthy People 2020 initiative to improve health across the nation, and the National Physical fac Activity Plan to increase physical activity for all Americans, Cardinal said.
If medical schools do not include physical activity education in their curriculums, physicians or other health care workers may need to find other ways to educate themselves about exercise and its role in keeping people healthy, or perhaps give the nod to other professionals who can, Cardinal said.

CORVALLIS, Ore. Engineers have combined innovative optical technology with nanocomposite thin-films to create a new type of sensor dice that is inexpensive, fast, highly sensitive and able to detect and analyze a wide range of gases.
The technology might find applications in everything from environmental monitoring to airport security or testing blood alcohol dice levels. The sensor dice is particularly suited to detecting carbon dioxide, and may be useful in industrial applications or systems designed to store carbon dioxide underground, as one approach to greenhouse gas reduction. dice
Oregon State University has filed for a patent on the invention, developed in collaboration with scientists dice at the National Energy Technology Lab or the U.S. Department of Energy, and with support from that agency. The findings were just reported in the Journal of Materials Chemistry C.
Optical sensing is very effective in sensing dice and identifying trace-level gases, but often uses large laboratory devices that are terribly expensive and can t be transported into the field, said Alan Wang, a photonics expert and an assistant professor in the OSU School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
By contrast, we use optical approaches that can be small, portable and inexpensive, Wang said. This system used plasmonic nanocrystals that act somewhat like a tiny lens, to concentrate a light wave and increase sensitivity.
This approach is combined with a metal-organic framework of thin films, which can rapidly adsorb gases within material pores, and be recycled by simple vacuum processes. After the thin film captures the gas molecules near the surface, dice the plasmonic materials act at a near-infrared range, help magnify the signal and precisely analyze the presence and amounts of different gases.
By working dice at the near-infrared range and using these plasmonic nanocrystals, there s an order of magnitude increase in sensitivity, said Chih-hung Chang, an OSU professor of chemical engineering. This type of sensor should be able to quickly tell exactly what gases are present and in what amount.
That dice speed, precision, portability and low cost, the researchers said, should allow instruments that can be used in the field for many purposes. The food industry, for industry, uses carbon dioxide in storage of fruits and vegetables, and the gas has to be kept at certain levels.
Gas detection can be valuable in finding explosives, dice and new technologies dice such as this might find application in airport or border security. A $1 million grant announced today from Knife River Corporation and MDU Construction Services student loans Group will help support creation of this laboratory, which will be called the MDU Resources Group Construction Safety Laboratory, officials student loans said.
This lab establishes us as the principal national facility for construction and transportation student loans safety research and education, said Scott Ashford, the dean and Kearney Professor of Engineering at the OSU College of Engineering.
We re delighted student loans to partner with Knife River and MDU Construction Services Group on this critically important project, Ashford said. These two companies are industry leaders in safety, and their commitment to our program will allow us to further advance processes and technologies that will help to better student loans prevent workplace injuries.
When complete, the lab will have two components to create a virtual construction environment that replicates real-world jobsites. An interactive, high-definition projection system will allow multiple users to conduct sample work operations without student loans actually putting workers at risk for injury. And a connected driving simulator will help evaluate driver and worker actions as vehicles pass through a work zone.
The lab will also expand and enhance an initiative begun several years ago at OSU to yield major improvements in worker safety by emphasizing prevention through student loans design. This concept emphasizes safety consideration at the very design stage to make buildings, bridges, roadways and other structures safer both to build and to maintain .
There s a long history in the construction industry of architects and design engineers leaving construction safety up to the builder or contractor, saying student loans it wasn t really the designer s concern, said John Gambatese, an OSU professor of civil engineering, leader in this new movement and a national expert in construction design and safety.
Some of this dates historically to the separation between owner, architect, student loans contractor, maintenance and construction worker, Gambatese said. There are also legal and liability issues. But there are many ways we can improve construction safety with this approach.
OSU student loans researchers and other experts eventually see construction safety, student loans both in design and job-site activities, as becoming one component of green construction concepts, and adding a social aspect to the idea of sustainability. Based in part on OSU research, the U.S. Green Building Council recently student loans added a pilot prevention through design credit to their rating system for sustainable buildings.
This emphasis on safety is needed, OSU researchers said. Construction is a traditionally student loans dangerous profession, with such risks as falls from an elevated height, electrocution, trench cave-ins, and many lesser workplace injuries.
The new laboratory at OSU will be able to simulate some of these situations on the jobsite, helping to identify safer ways to work while also studying improved productivity and minimizing costs, officials said.

CORVALLIS, Ore. Deep-water marine fish living on the continental slopes at depths monster high from 2,000 feet to one mile have liver pathologies, tumors and other health problems that may be linked to human-caused  pollution, one of the first studies of its type has found.
The research, conducted in the Bay of Biscay west of France, also discovered the first case of a deep water fish species with an intersex condition monster high , a blend of male and female sex organs. The sampling was done in an area with no apparent point-source pollution, and appears to reflect general ocean conditions.
The findings have been published in Marine Environmental Research, by scientists from Oregon State University; the Centre for Environment, monster high Fisheries and Aquaculture Science in the United Kingdom; and other agencies. It was supported by the European Union. monster high
The research is of particular interest, OSU researchers said, when contrasted to other studies done several years ago in national parks of the American West, which also found significant pollution and fish health impacts, including male fish that had been feminized and developed eggs.
In areas ranging from pristine, high mountain lakes of the United States to ocean waters off the coasts of France and Spain, we ve now found evidence of possible human-caused pollution that s bad enough monster high to have pathological impacts on fish, said Michael Kent, a professor of microbiology in the OSU College of Science, co-author on both these research projects and an international expert on fish disease.
Deep in the ocean one might have thought that the level of contamination and its biological impact would be less, Kent said. That may not be the case. The pathological changes we re seeing are clearly the type associated with exposure to toxins and carcinogens.
However, monster high linking these changes in the deep water fish to pollution is preliminary at this time, the researchers said, because these same changes may also be caused by naturally-occurring compounds. Follow up chemical analyses would provide monster high more conclusive links with the pathological changes and man s activity, they said.
Few, if any health surveys monster high of this type have been done on the fish living on the continental slopes, the researchers said. Most past studies have looked only at their parasite fauna, not more internal biological problems such as liver damage. monster high The issues are important, however, since there s growing interest in these areas as a fisheries resource, as other fisheries on the shallower continental shelf become depleted.
As the sea deepens along these continental slopes, it s been known that it can act as a sink for heavy metal contaminants such as mercury, cadmium and lead, and organic contaminants such as PCBs and pesticides. Some of the intersex fish that have been discovered elsewhere are also believed to have mutated sex organs caused by endocrine disrupting chemicals that can mimic estrogens.
In this study, the health concerns identified were found in black scabbardfish, monster high orange roughy, greater forkbeard and other less-well-known species, and included a wide range of degenerative and inflammatory lesions that indicate a host response to pathogens, as well as natural cell turnover. The fish that live in these deep water, sloping regions usually grow slowly, live near the seafloor, and mature at a relatively old age. Some can live to be 100 years old.
Partly because of that longevity, the fish have the capacity to bioaccumulate toxicants, which the researchers said in their report may be a significant human health issue if those species are destined for human consumption. Organic pollutants in such species may be 10-17 times higher than those found in fish from the continental shelf, the study noted, monster high with the highest level of contaminants in the deepest-dwelling fish.
However, most of those contaminants migrate to the liver and gonads of such fish, which would make their muscle tissue monster high comparatively less toxic, and generally not high enough for human health concern, the researchers wrote.
In the previous research done in the American West, scientists found toxic contamination from pesticides, the burning of fossil fuels, agriculture, industrial operations and other sources, which primarily monster high found their way into high mountain monster high lakes through air pollution. CORVALLIS, Ore. Oregon State University researchers have received a $1 million grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation that will allow them to outfit a pair of undersea gliders with acoustical sensors to identify ppl biological hot spots in the coastal ocean.
We spend all of this time on ships, deploying instrumentation that basically ppl is designed to see how ocean biology aggregates around physical ppl features like hake at the edge of the continental shelf or salmon at upwelling fronts, said Jack Barth , a professor in OSU s College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences ppl and a principal investigator on the project. But that just gives us a two-week window into a particular area.
We already have a basic understanding of the ecosystem, Barth added. Now we want to get a better ppl handle of what kind of marine animals are out there, how many there are, where they are distributed, and how they respond to phytoplankton blooms, schools of baitfish or oceanic features. It will benefit a variety of stakeholders, from the fishing industry ppl and resource managers to the scientific community.
Barth is a physical oceanographer who knows the physical processes of the coastal ocean. ppl He ll work with Kelly Benoit-Bird , a marine ecologist, who specializes in the relationships among marine organisms from tiny plankton to large whales. Her work utilizes acoustics to identify and track animals below the ocean surface and it is these sensors that will open up a new world of research aboard the gliders.
Our first goals are to understand the dynamics of the Pacific Northwest upwelling system, find the biological hotspots, and then see how long they last, Benoit-Bird said. Then we d like to learn what we can about the distribution of prey and predators and the relationship of both to oceanic conditions.
Using robot-mounted acoustic sensors, the OSU researchers will be able to identify different kinds of marine animals using their unique acoustical signatures. Diving seabirds, for example, ppl leave a trail of bubbles through the water like the contrail left by a jet. Zooplankton ppl show up as a diffuse cloud. Schooling fish create a glowing, amoeba-shaped image.
We ve done this kind of work from ships, but you re more or less anchored in one spot, which is limiting, Benoit-Bird said. By putting sensors ppl on gliders, we hope to follow fish, or circle ppl around a plankton bloom, or see how seabirds dive. We want to learn more about what is going on out there.
Programming a glider to spend weeks out in the ocean and then think when it encounters certain cues, is a challenge that falls upon the third member of the research team, Geoff Hollinger , from OSU s robotics program in the College of Engineering . Undersea gliders ppl operated by Oregon State already can be programmed to patrol offshore for weeks at a time, following a transect, moving up and down in the water column, and even rising to the surface to beam data back to onshore labs via satellite.
But the instruments aboard the gliders that measure temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen are comparatively simple and require limited power. Using sophisticated bioacoustics sensors that record huge amounts of data, and then programming the gliders to respond to environmental cues, is a significant technological ppl advance.
All of the technology is there, Hollinger said, but combining it into a package to perform on a glider is a huge robotics and systems engineering challenge. You need lots of computing power, longer battery life, and advanced control algorithms.
It is a little like looking at economic indicators in the stock market, Hollinger pointed out. Just one indicator is unlikely to tell you how a stock will perform. We need to develop an algorithm that essentially turns the glider into an autonomous vehicle that can run on autopilot.
The three-year research project should benefit fisheries management, protection of endangered species, analyzing the impacts of new ocean uses such as wave energy, and documenting impacts of climate change, the researchers say.
Oregon State has become a national leader in the use of undersea ppl gliders in research to study the coastal ocean and now owns and operates ppl more than 20 of the instruments through three separate research initiatives. Barth said the vision is to establish a center for underwater vehicles and acoustics research which would be a key component of its recently announced Marine Studies Initiative.

OSU researchers found that young women with lower levels of vitamin D were more likely to have clinically significant mrs depressive symptoms over the course of a five-week study, lead author David Kerr said. The results were consistent even when researchers took into account other possible explanations, such as time of year, exercise and time spent outside.
Depression has multiple, powerful causes and if vitamin D is part of the picture, it is just a small part, said Kerr, an associate professor in the School of Psychological Science at OSU. But given how many people are affected by depression, any little inroad we can find could have an important impact on public health.
The findings were published recently in the journal Psychiatry mrs Research . Co-authors are Sarina Saturn of the School of Psychological Science; Balz Frei and Adrian mrs Gombart of OSU s Linus Pauling Institute; mrs David Zava of ZRT Laboratory mrs and Walter Piper, a former OSU student mrs now at New York University.
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for bone health and muscle function. Deficiency has been associated with impaired immune function, some forms of cancer and cardiovascular disease, said Gombart, an associate professor of biochemistry and biophysics, principal investigator with the Linus Pauling mrs Institute and international expert on vitamin D and the immune response.
People create their own vitamin D when their skin is exposed to sunlight. When sun is scarce in the winter, people can take a supplement, but vitamin D also is found in some foods, including milk that is fortified with it, Gombart said. The recommended daily allowance of vitamin D is 600 IU per day. There is no established level of vitamin D sufficiency for mental health.
The new study was prompted in part because there is a widely held belief that vitamin D and depression are connected, but there is not actually much scientific research out there to support the belief, Kerr said.
According to Kerr and his colleagues, a lot of past research has actually found no association between the two, but much of that research has been based on much older adults or special medical populations.
Kerr s study focused on young women in the Pacific mrs Northwest because they are at risk of both depression and vitamin D insufficiency. Past research found that 25 percent of American women experience clinical depression mrs at some point in their lives, compared to 16 percent of men, for example.
OSU researchers recruited 185 college students, all women ages 18-25, to participate in the study at different times during the school year. Vitamin D levels were measured from blood samples and participants completed a depression symptom survey each week for five weeks.
Many women in the study had vitamin D levels considered insufficient for good health, and the rates were much higher among women of color, with 61 percent of women of color recording insufficient levels, compared to 35 percent of other women.
