Life is really just a series of stories that strengthen our understanding. This day? I can remember being at the lakeshore, and she was insistent on getting to the water, and stepping in. I wanted to stop her for a million reasons. I thought of all the times when she was a baby that we carried her into the water. But one day? You just step back and let them go. Her shorts were soaked, school closings she stepped on rocks, picked up driftwood, and even though the water was freezing, she enjoyed it. Because it was her journey. There is this continual internal struggle to make learning and life ‘easy.’ We feel it, we sometimes do it, and we don’t always see the missed opportunities. But ‘easy’ isn’t learning. Letting go, encouraging struggle, and providing just the right kind of support? It’s not always easy for them, and it’s almost never easy for us. But, it’s learning.
